The Largest Town in Vermont in AREA and Rebecca's Home Town!

The not-as-famous Blue Ridge mountain range runs through Chittenden and Mendon.  Rebecca often heard her father refer to it when he didn't have time enough to go out hunting for a full day, he would say to mom - I'm just going up on Blue Ridge for a bit - because it was nearby, right in back of our house.  When Rebecca and Betsy were looking for a name for their soon-to-be real estate company, Rebecca mentioned Blue Ridge and Betsy immediately identified with taking her daughters hiking on Blue Ridge in Mendon.  It was a neat connection to realize they had in common and that's where the name comes from.

Eddy Brothers, Chittenden

I believe it was the Summer of 1969, I would have been 12 years old when Yankee Magazine revived the story of the famous Eddy Brothers who had conducted séances back In the 1820’s in their farmhouse in Chittenden.   The article detailed all sorts of paranormal activity that was said to be occurring and was investigated by a rather famous fellow, Henry Olcott from the New York Tribune magazine. With the other neighborhood kids and my siblilngs, we learned about and located Honto’s Cave, making several trips there that year and it became a favorite hiking spot in subsequent years, although I haven’t done it now in so long, I wonder if I could find the big rocks that form the cave.
Mom was working at the Wooden Barrel Country Store the year this story broke, a center of activity where you met up and kept up with the happenings in town. That summer we also met many people following up and inquiring about the Yankee article. Some of these folks were downright strange, most wanted directions to the Cave or the Eddy house and some even wanted guided tours, preferably at midnight which excited us, as kids, but mom nixed the idea.
Much is written about these Eddy Brothers and it is an interesting story. For additional information, try   Henry Olcott’s book People From The Other World or these websites:
